Doing Business As (DBA)

Finding just the right name for your practice is imperative to the future of your business—too confusing or complicated and potential patients may not know what you do or the services you offer.

Naming your business is also a very personal decision. Some doctors might want to see their name on the door, while others might want to retain some privacy as a small business owner and go with a name independent of their own.

What is a DBA?

If you’re still contemplating, consider a DBA or “doing business as” name for your practice. It’s essentially the assumed, fictitious or trade name you choose to do business under.

When you form a business, the legal name of that business automatically defaults to the person or entity who owns it. For example: if Joe Smith is opening his own practice, the legal name of his practice will be “Joe Smith” unless he chooses something different. Joe chooses “Smith Healthcare” as his DBA. After registering his DBA, his full name is no longer directly associated with the business but he is still the owner and sole proprietor of “Smith Healthcare.”
