You may have heard of NPI numbers, but don’t know exactly what they are or if you need one. Here’s an overview.
An NPI number is a National Provider Identifier. It’s a unique, 10-digit number assigned to a health care provider. The HIPAA Administrative Simplification provisions required implementation of NPIs for consistency.
This standard approach makes it easy to identify providers as they complete various transactions, such as filing claims and coordination of benefits. NPIs are used by covered providers, health plans and health care clearinghouses in administration and financial transactions.
